At Greensboro Shotokan Karate, we focus on traditional karate, in the form of kihon (fundamentals), kata, and kumite. Practices are designed to help the student learn and improve.
Traditional karate is very beneficial for people of various physical abilities. It is important to realize that that mental discipline in karate is even more important than the physical aspect.
We begin each practice with “Rei” and end with “Rei”. That is, we begin and end each practice with respect for one another and ourselves. Each practice consists of:
- Warm-Ups
- Joint rotations
- Light Stretching
- Basic or Fundamental Techniques
- Stanches
- Blocks
- Strikes
- Kicks
- Forms (kata), Practical applications, and/or Sparring (kumite)
- Kumite is in various forms. Beginners are gradually introduced to sparring
To get started, you may wear comfortable exercise clothes. As you practice more, it will be important to purchase a karate uniform, also known as a gi.
- Cost ($75 first year SKA membership plus dojo dues)
- Monthly dojo dues are $40
